Our client has a young family and needed to create a more child friendly environment. They had a series of circular raised decking areas which had started to degrade and had become dangerous and slippy. The aspect of the garden was interesting and they had a nice south facing sloped back garden. We had to firstly restructure the boundary retaining wall and regrade the terrain with the use of a mini digger.
The design brief was simple. An area for the children to play in but a level area. An area for evening entertaining with a built-in BBQ. They also wanted a small raised bed area to plant some seeds with the children. I suggested we go with a sloped gradient to connect the two areas as this would be more child friendly. The tumbled yellow limestone set this project off with edging stones and the wooden sleepers break up the hard surfaces. As with all projects the planting is critical and we wanted to create a lush, tropical feel to this small space. The use of Dicksonia, Nadinia and tracycarpus fortune will only get better with time.
